Michael Franti & Spearhead’s latest release, All Rebel Rockers is a fantastic followup to Yell Fire! Many of the songs have a Buju Banton type sound to them, but he continues his meaningful lyrics and great rhythm all the way through the album.

This could be my top release for 2008 so far.
This week there was a great reissue released, Cold Fact by Rodriguez. He is a largely forgotten talent. Having originally released this in 1970 and was ignored and forgotten. Well except in South Africa where it became a platinum selling album without him even knowing. Rodriguez was so forgotten even his label couldn’t find him until the late 90’s when he was found alive and well in Detroit. The rerelease of Cold Fact is great for anyone who has never listened to his music. Its just quite incredible.

Muxtape is in trouble right now, so check him out live in Australia Last year.
Today’s band for your enjoyment, is Dr. Dog. Their latest album Fate continues in their streak of great albums. Pitchfork panned it pretty bad, not sure why, its outstanding. Their music is a blend of Flamming Lips, the Beatles and their own sound. Its availble for streaming below. I enjoy, and so should you!
If you’ve never listened to the hold steady, I’ll fill you in on what you’ve been missing. Basically a college life style minus the classes. Parties, concerts, girls, and gambling on horses. Pretty much they would be the background music to my life. Their latest album Stay Positive continues with these themes and makes for a stellar album.

You DC folks should go see them at the 9:30 club on August 14th. I’ve heard they put on a fantastic show.
Here they are on Letterman.
Today I got ahold of Laura Marlin’s Alas I Cannot Swim, and its great. My initial introduction was just a short EP that didn’t really show case her as much as this album. My favorite track is Alas I cannot not swim, which is on the back end of the track Your Only Doll (Dora), its a great song, so listen through the song, after the bird chirps it turns into a fantastic song.

King Khan and The Shrines new album, The Supreme Genius of King Khan and The Shrines is a retro sound that rocks, its not your Amy Winehouse crack induced soul craptacularness kind of retro, but your garage rock retro with a touch of 70’s soul. Just check out the album cover.

Frightened Rabbit’s new Album “The Midnight Organ Fight” is great! The folk-rock-electric sounds with the powerful Scottish Voice make for some very powerful tunes. They tend to be of the depressing type of lyrics, but the backing music of these tracks, can be uplifting at the same time. The outstanding tracks for me are The Modern Leper and Keep Yourself Warm.
Today I came across Jukebox the Ghost from the great non state of Washington DC. First listen they are the Killers meets Queen and Ben Folds. Good stuff all around. Check them out and let me know what you think.
